Richmond Beer and Travel Guide

Richmond is a fantastic beer city to visit! They are cranking out some delicious brews and have some awesome places to explore.

RVA Tips:

  • Hang out in Scott’s Addition—there’s a plethora of breweries, cideries, wineries, and distilleries all within walking distance of each other.

  • Bop around Carytown and The Fan! These two neighborhoods are overflowing with restaurants, bars and shops to explore.

Adventures & Ales Top Recommendations:

  • The Veil Brewing Co.: Their main location in Scott’s Addition has a fantastic outdoor patio to relax on with a variety of beers to choose from. Their Sours and Stouts are my personal favorites that they make! In Scott’s Addition they’ve got Nokoribi inside with a Japanese yakitori inspired menu.

    • The Funkhaust Cafe is their smaller funkier taproom with chill vibes and a small tap list. The hours are limited here so be sure to check ahead of time.

    • Forest Hill is their third, larger location and is across the river in Richmond. Y Tu Mama is located inside this location serving up delicious Mexican eats.

  • Triple Crossing Beer: Their Fulton location has chill vibes and is one of my favorites spots in town to hang out. There is a ton of outdoor space, great pizzas, and absolutely phenomenal IPAs! Their downtown location has a great patio as well.

  • The Answer Brewpub: Great beers, particularly their ‘Joose’ Fruit Beer series and Stouts. They’ve also got tasty food.

  • Nate’s Bagels: A delicious bagel shop downtown. Order online ahead of time to skip the line!

  • Mekong: A Vietnamese restaurant and beer bar with a superb tap list. It is connected to The Answer Brewpub and owned by the same folks.

  • Roastology: A delicious spot for breakfast and coffee! Their biscuits are massive and delightful.

  • Final Gravity Brewing Company: A great brewery just outside of central Richmond specializing in Hazy IPAs. They have a beautiful, dog-friendly taproom as well!

  • Corks and Kegs: A killer bottle shop with a few taps and great selection of cans and bottles.

Nate’s Bagels

Other Ideas:

  • SB’s Love Shack: A fun dive-bar-esque spot for breakfast, lunch and brunch. They have two locations: Lakeside and Main Street.

  • Tabol Brewing: A Lager focused brewery in the northside neighborhood. They have a nice patio and a cute space. They have their own food truck onsite and frequent live music.

  • Vasen Brewing Company: A brewery with a wide variety of beers just up the block from The Veil in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood.

  • Hardywood Park Craft Brewery: A large brewery with lots of outdoor space and chill vibes. Their Stouts and seasonal releases are what they do best!

  • Benchtop Brewing: A Lager focused brewery in the Manchester neighborhood with solid brews. Their main taproom is in Norfolk, VA.

  • Zorch Pizza: A delicious spot for ‘za in the Carytown neighborhood. Heads up this is a popular spot!

  • Richbrau Brewing: A solid brewery right downtown with a small food menu. Their Sours are particularly good!

  • 821 Café: A delicious spot for brunch! They’ve got lots of vegan and vegetarian options as well.

  • Bingo Beer Co.: Another brewery in Scott’s Addition with a full arcade and food menu.

  • Cupertino’s Bagels: Yummy New York style bagels!

  • Social 52 Kitchen and Craft Bar: A restaurant and bar with a solid beer selection and craft cocktails. Right near SB’s so if you have to wait for brunch this is an ideal spot to grab a drink while you wait!

  • Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop: A popular brewery in Scott’s Addition with a lovely rooftop patio. They usually have a food truck out front as well. The beer here is average.

  • Ardent Craft Ales: One of RVA’s OG breweries with average beers and a nice patio space. Located in Scott’s Addition.

My Top Beers in July & August 2022

July and August were a wild ride! I went on a 5 week solo road trip and visited 93 breweries across 10 states, so needless to say there were a TON of great beers drank. In no particular order, here were the best beers I had over July and August:

ever grain brewing

Eternal Vigilance from Ever Grain Brewing in Camp Hill, PA

Eternal Vigilance is an Imperial IPA with Motueka, Citra and Riwaka hops. This was a delicious juice bomb that I thoroughly enjoyed. Ever Grain was a great stop in Pennsylvania en route to Washington D.C. The food and beers were delicious and I’d highly recommend checking it out if you’re ever in the area!

other half vast air

Vast Air from Other Half Brewing in Bloomfield, NY

Vast Air 2021 Blend is a Wild Ale spontaneously fermented in a coolship. Other Half’s Finger Lakes taproom specializes in Wild and Farmhouse Ales and they are absolutely crushing it. This was a delicious and refreshing brew on their gorgeous farm setting.

very special lord whangdoodle

Very Special Lord Whangdoodle from The Veil Brewing in Richmond, VA

Very Special Lord Whangdoodle is an Imperial Chocolate Milk Stout aged in a blend of Bourbon, Cognac, Maple, and Apple Brandy Barrels conditioned on double hazelnuts, double truffle, double vanilla, and double coconut. This was an insanely delicious beer. The Veil’s Stouts are always impressive, but this was one of my favorite beers I have had in a long time.

other half double citra chroma daydream

Double Citra Chroma Daydream from Other Half Brewing in New York, NY

This is a Triple Dry Hopped Oat Cream Imperial IPA with Citra hops, Citra Cryo, and Citra Incognito all hand-selected and paired with a ton of oats and a hint of milk sugar. This was a creamy, juicy brew that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Broccoli's Axe

Broccoli’s Axe collaboration brew from Other Half Brewing in New York, NY and Fidens Brewing in Colonie, NY

Broccoli’s Axe is an Imperial IPA with Mosaic, Simcoe, Hallertau Blanc, Cascade, Citra and Galaxy. This is a collaboration based on Other Half’s Broccoli and Fidens’ Eugene’s Axe, arguably their flagship beers. It is no surprise that these two created something so fantastic!

Adieu Adieu

Adieu Adieu from Monkish Brewing in Torrance, CA

Adieu Adieu is a Double Dry Hopped Triple IPA with Citra hops. Monkish is consistently great with their IPAs, but Adieu Adieu takes it to another level. This is a top beer of 2022 for me so far!

phase three brewing

Eunoia Batch 10 from Phase Three Brewing in Lake Zurich, IL

Eunoia Batch 10 is a Barrel-Aged Neapolitan Imperial Stout with strawberry, cocoa nibs and vanilla. Eunoia is one of my favorite series of Stouts out there and I was thrilled to finally get to try it at the source! Normally I don’t love a fruity Stout but this one was a great balance.

Spotted Cow

Spotted Cow from New Glarus Brewing in New Glarus, WI

Spotted Cow is a Cask Conditioned Farmhouse Ale and the flagship beer of New Glarus (and perhaps the entire state of Wisconsin!). Spotted Cow is a classic brew but having it on tap at their taproom was even better! This is a very unique beer that is perfect for the summertime.

blackstack brewing

Conducting Business collaboration brew from BlackStack Brewing in St. Paul, MN and Orchestrated Minds Brewing in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Conducting Business is a Double Dry Hopped Imperial IPA with Amarillo, El Dorado, El Dorado Cryo, Citra and Citra Cryo hops. BlackStack and Orchestrated Minds are both superb breweries so it is no surprise that this beer was top-notch!

Check back next month to see my top beers of September! Cheers —Alexis

My Top Beers in September 2021

September brought the return of college football with lots of game beers and a trip to Richmond, Virginia for Zwanze Day 2021. Check out my top beers in September 2021 below:

Cantillon Saint Lamvinus

Saint Lamvinus from Cantillon Brewery in Brussels, Belgium

Saint Lamvinus is a blend of Lambics aged 16 to 18 months and of Merlot grapes. We enjoyed this fantastic brew at Zwanze Day hosted by The Veil Brewing. This was my top Cantillon beer of the day and truly phenomenal.

Triple Crossing

The Sum of Its Parts from Triple Crossing Brewing in Richmond, VA

The Sum of Its Parts is a Mixed Culture Ale with petit manseng juice and dry hopped Nelson Sauvin hops. Triple Crossing is known for their juicy IPAs, but don’t sleep on their Wild Ales! It is best enjoyed on the Triple Crossing patio with pizza and pretzels!

Lake James Rind

Lake James Rind: Ashtray Style from Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton, NC & Salud Beer Shop in Charlotte, NC

Lake James Rind is an adjunct Lager with heritage corn, lime zest, tajin, and watermelon. This is a classic summer sipper from Fonta Flora and always a delight, but to step up your game I suggest you have it ashtray style at Salud. In the NoDa neighborhood of Charlotte, Salud Beer Shop offers an even better version of Lake James Rind with lime, hot sauce, pepper, and tajin.

Zwanze 2021 Parasol from Cantillon Brewery in Brussels, Belgium

Zwanze 2021 Parasol is a special blend of Lambic and a citrus blend featuring mostly oranges. This was another delightful brew from Cantillon and it was awesome to get to experience Zwanze Day for the first time. This years release was refreshing and light with a hint of orange.

The Answer

Zero Drunk Thirty 7th Breakfast Club and Condron Raspberry Blueberry Cheesecake from The Answer Brewpub in Richmond, VA

Zero Drunk Thirty 7th Breakfast Club is The Answer’s 7th Anniversary Barrel Blend Imperial Chocolate Stout. The barrels were Laird's Apple, Rye, and Rum. It is then brewed with Banana Flambé, Saigon cinnamon, Tahitian vanilla and Vermont maple. This was a delicious Imperial Stout that is thick with flavor and booziness. Another killer beer at the answer was one of their Jooses: Condron Raspberry Blueberry Cheesecake. This is a Fruited Sour with Raspberry Blueberry Cheesecake. All of the Joose series is great, but these two fruits and the cheesecake flavor made it a perfect indulgence.

The Veil Funkhaust Cafe

Banana Vanilla Almond Apple Brandy Circle of Wolves from The Veil Brewing Co. in Richmond, VA

Banana Vanilla Almond Apple Brandy Circle of Wolves is an English Barleywine aged in @lairdsapplejack Apple Brandy barrels for 20 months then conditioned on bananas, Madagascar vanilla, and Marcona almonds. This was hands down the best beer I’ve had this month and will go down as one of my top beers of 2021. The banana hits heavy but in a delicious way and the apple brandy kicks in on the back. Highly recommend!

Check back next month to see my top beers from October!
